Orthodontics is a specialized form of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental and facial irregularities. Orthodontic treatment involves the use of corrective appliances (often referred to as braces or clear aligners) to bring teeth, lips, and jaws into proper alignment.

Many patients benefit from orthodontic treatment because they feel more confident in their appearance. If you’ve been considering orthodontic treatment, schedule a consultation with one of our dentists to learn more.

There are three major types of orthodontic treatment that are most preferred for treatment.

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most commonly used orthodontic treatment. They are made from metal brackets and wires. These braces are very strong and can withstand most types of treatment.

There are many different types of metal braces. Some styles are nearly invisible, while others have colorful elastics that can make them stand out.

Clear Braces

Clear braces with brackets are similar to traditional braces but feature clear or tooth-colored brackets. Due to the clear brackets, these braces are much less visible than traditional braces. It is effective and provides better overall dental health to the patient.

Invisalign

Invisalign (also known as clear aligners) are removable orthodontic aligners that only a dentist can prescribe. Invisalign aligners are clear, comfortable, and barely noticeable to others. They are a great treatment for teenagers or adults with mild to moderate orthodontic issues.

Invisalign aligners are designed to move the teeth into their ideal position. They are switched out every few weeks, and this process continues until the teeth are in their ideal position. Invisalign aligners must be worn 20-22 hours each day.

Which is better for me?

Traditional metal braces are an excellent choice for almost all cases, especially more complex cases like deep bites, cross bites, and crooked teeth. These braces are the strongest and most effective option available.

In some cases, patients may want to choose a different type of treatment. Invisalign® and clear braces are a great choice for patients who may not like the appearance of the metal brackets and wires, as patients can wear them without anyone knowing.Tanega Dental, located in South San Francisco, CA, is equipped with the best dentists and latest technologies.
